![]() ![]() In an animated story, customers received personalized insights on their natural gas usage last winter and advice on how to save energy and cut costs. In partnership with Oracle Utilities Opower, National Grid launched a pilot of their first-ever video energy reports. This is called a "Shared Meter" and you have recourse for it.National Grid is helping its customers better understand their energy journey, 90-seconds at a time. If anything in the common areas or your neighbors apartments are tied into your meter, you have unauthorized load and should contact your landlord and the utility. If you're on friendly terms with neighbors in the adjoining units, give them a heads up on what you're doing and ask them to look on your behalf for things that shut down when you flip the breaker off. Listen for one of your neighbors getting agitated and knock to see if their power is flickering. If you're positive everything is off, have your girlfriend toggle the breaker on and off while you walk through common areas of the apartment looking for lights or electronics that turn on/off with the breaker. Sometimes things like a security system or a water heater can only be turned off at the breaker. Try and figure out if it is something you missed turning off or unplugging. Any breaker that slows or stops the spinning on the meter has something connected that was actively drawing power. Turn the main breaker back on and start throwing the individual breakers one at a time. While that is a good thing, it doesn't mean you're in the clear. If the meter stopped spinning, that means there isn't anything tapped in between your meter and breaker box. Did the meter stop spinning? If it's turning at all, something is tapped in between your breaker box and the meter and it's likely unauthorized usage which can be unintentional due to errors in the apartment's electrical design, or intentional theft. The unplug part is critical, almost all modern electronics draw "phantom power" so even if your TV or computer monitors are "off," if they are plugged in they are still drawing some electricity. Unplug and turn off everything in your apartment. They are also still fully exposed to system congestion costs which is a major component of the supply price that they have literally zero control over.ĭo you have access to your meter & breaker box? National Grid is legally blocked from trying to profit off providing you power, ESCOs are trying to make as much money as they can off of you. They are going to change providers assuming it will save them money in the long run, and they are almost always wrong. Most people aren't going to jump to a new ESCO every month scooping introductory rates. While the entire point of a fixed contract is that you pay a little more to stabilize your bill, you still would have been better off taking the market rate and going on the budget plan to stabilize your monthly payments. None of the fixed plans offered go below $0.10. None of those plans introductory rates are cheaper than the PSC filed rate for October billing I linked above. Zero plans offer guaranteed savings and all of those plans list their current rates as 1 month introductory rates. The PCS power to choose site has 4 plans that are listed as cheaper than the NGRID rate posted on power to choose. The rate posting for the month of October for Zone F shows it will be $0.057 Right now the 12-month trailing average for NGrid customers in Zone F (capital region) is $0.094 per kwh. It actually is though, to the point the PSC almost scrapped the entire program as it was dominated by predatory scams.
